Root chimes in, slows Aussies in Gabba ODI

A double blow from Joe Root has slowed Australia after a quick start to the second ODI at the Gabba.

The occasional off-spin of Joe Root has slowed Australia's charge towards 300 in the second ODI at the Gabba.

Brought on to get through some quick overs, Root had Steve Smith trapped in front for 18 in his first over, the Australian captain burning his side's only review in the process.

He then continued to turn the screws as Travis Head (seven off 18) scratched around and eventually became his second victim, with the hosts 3-149 after 28 overs.

Australia had put on 68 for the first wicket after Smith won the toss and chose to bat, with Warner (35) also undone by spin in the form of Moeen Ali.

Following a century in Sunday's series-opening loss, Aaron Finch was unbeaten on 73 in the 28th over and again holds the key for Australia.

Australia made three changes to the side that lost Sunday's series-opener, with sick pair Tim Paine and Josh Hazlewood - who was due to step in for the rested Pat Cummins - replaced by debutantes Alex Carey and Jhye Richardson.

Cameron White was also brought into the side for his first ODI in nearly three years, at the expense of leg-spinner Adam Zampa.

Zampa's omission was questioned by former Australian skipper Michael Clarke and former English batsman Kevin Pietersen, who both saw merit in playing a specialist spinner at the Gabba.

It is a worrying selection for Zampa given he was briefly unseated by Ashton Agar in last year's tour of India and returned career-worst figures of 0-72 in Melbourne.

Carey will travel with the squad to Sydney in case Paine does not recover in time for Sunday's match.

If not required, Carey will travel to Melbourne on Sunday to join the Adelaide Strikers for Monday's Big Bash League match.
