Root hits ton for England in warm-up

Captain Joe Root has scored a century for England in their practice match ahead of the first Test against New Zealand.

England captain Joe Root has scored a century in his side's final warm-up match ahead of the Test series against New Zealand.

Root scored 115 in a four-day match against a New Zealand XI in Hamilton.

It provided the backbone of the tourists' 9-353 in 90 overs at Seddon Park, with opener Mark Stoneman (48) and Dawid Malan (45) also contributing.

Their batting against the red ball was more convincing than when confronted with the pink ball two days earlier at the same venue.

Both two-day games were drawn.

England's innings on Saturday was in response to the Kiwi selection's 287, which featured 73 from Martin Guptill.

New Zealand XI paceman Scott Kuggeleijn claimed 3-67.
