Newcastle fan favourite Nathan Ross has extended his contract with the NRL club until the end of the 2020 season.

Ross, who was already signed until the end of next year, is the struggling club's leading try-scorer this year with 10 four-pointers in 13 games.

The news comes just months after the 28-year-old sparked controversy when he threatened to walk out on the club if he couldn't secure an upgrade on his previous contract.

He was subsequently dropped to reserve grade after the comments, before returning in Newcastle's next game.

However he was all smiles following the confirmation of his extension on Wednesday.

"I am over the moon and this has been something the club and I have been working towards," Ross said.

"I love Newcastle ... and consider myself a Novocastrian.

"I really believe in the direction the club is heading ... and there is no way I was going to miss out on it."
