Hawthorn key forward Jarryd Roughead will miss Sunday's AFL top-four shaping clash with Fremantle at Patersons Stadium after accepting a one-match ban for tripping.

Roughead would normally have been able to escape with a reprimand for tripping Melbourne's Dom Tyson, but a previous poor record and the resulting carry-over points saw the sanction increased to one match.

The absence of the Coleman Medal pacesetter against the Dockers will be keenly felt by the Hawks, as they are also likely to be without another marking forward in Jack Gunston due to a knee injury.

Top-placed Hawthorn will finish in the top two on the ladder if they win their remaining three home and away games.

The Dockers are two matches behind the Hawks in fourth place.
