Speaking as she left Brazil's presidential palace, suspended President Dilma Rousseff was defiant - vowing she would fight to clear her name.
Brazil's first female president is accused of illegally manipulating finances to hide a growing public deficit ahead of her re-election in 2014.
"When an elected President is suspended because of an accusation of a crime I haven't committed, the name we give is not impeachment - it's coup".
Senators had voted to suspend her 55 votes to 22 after an all-night session that lasted more than 20 hours.
Vice-President Michel Temer has now officially taken over as interim leader and has appointed a team.
Obama administration spokesman Josh Earnest says the United States trusts Brazil's democratic process.
"Brazil is under some scrutiny, is under some pressure. And the United States is going to be there to support our friend and partner as they deal with the significant challenges they're facing right now. As it relates to the political situation, we continue to have confidence in the mature, durable, democratic institutions in Brazil."
This is the second impeachment scandal to shake Brazil in recent decades.
In 1992, impeachment proceedings began against Fernando Collor de Mello, Brazil's first democratically elected president after more than two decades of military rule.
Accused of corruption, he resigned the presidency in 1992 as his trial was about to begin.
He was convicted and barred from holding public office for a period of eight years.
Now a state senator, Mr Collor voted in favour of Ms Rousseff's impeachment.
"It is a crime of responsibility Mr President, the mere irresponsibility with the country, whether it's through incompetence, negligence or bad faith. But it wasn't for lack of warning. Since the beginning of this government I went throughout the years to the President's advisers to show them the problems I was foreseeing and that resulted in this crisis without precedent."
Brazil is suffering from its worst recession in 10 years, unemployment reached nine per cent in 2015 and inflation is at a 12-year high.
Ms Rousseff's trial is due to take place before November 8.
