A western Queensland cafe is under fire over a message on a sandwich board that declared "No Muslims".

A photograph of the sign was posted on the automatically-generated Facebook page of the Eagles Nest Bar and Grill in Longreach last week.

The entire message read "2000 years ago Jesus Christ made headlines turning water into wine ... the tradition continues ... We turn money into beer (Sorry No Muslims)".

The image has been shared widely on social media, attracting both condemnation and support.

The cafe's owner, John Hawkes, says he's received more than 200 phone calls in 24 hours.

"While the great majority are in support of free speech and are of patriotic sentiment, we have fielded too many abusive and threatening calls," he told the ABC.

"For this, I apologise to my family."

Longreach mayor Joe Owens insisted the town and region welcomes all Muslims, or any other religion or race.

"It's a very unfortunate thing that's come out from one individual," he told the ABC.

"The chalkboard mentioned here, the message is changed daily. It's something that I would probably presume has been wiped out and replaced."

Moderators of the Facebook page "Boycott Halal in Australia? No Way", one of the first sites to share the image, are calling for the author of the message to apologise.

The Longreach Regional Council has received at least one verbal complaint, Fairfax Media reports.
