Roy Hill's first shipment still weeks away

Roy Hill's first shipment of iron ore appears to have been pushed back, but boss Barry Fitzgerald is confident the project will come online in 2015.

Gina Rinehart's $10 billion Roy Hill project is still weeks away from its first shipment of iron ore.

Initially scheduled to be completed in September, the project was expected to deliver its first shipment in October, but chief executive Barry Fitzgerald has indicated that has been delayed.

"We would hope to see first ore on ship some time in November, but recognising commissioning is problematic it will be when it will be," he told reporters.

"It's not a matter of not trying, it's simply a matter of stepping through the processes."

Mr Fitzgerald said he was confident the Pilbara project will come online before the end of the year.

"Commissioning is an unknown thing and people use their best endeavours to design the right thing," he said.

Iron ore prices have fallen again in recent weeks, but Roy Hill remains in the lower quartile in terms of its costs, Mr Fitzgerald said.
