Former prime minister Kevin Rudd wanted a sympathetic phone chat with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after he was dumped as Labor leader in 2010.

According to released emails from Mrs Clinton's private server, US ambassador to Australia Jeffrey Bleich said Mr Rudd hadn't heard from her.

"He has received such a call from POTUS (President Barack Obama) already. But, I think he and S (Mrs Clinton) had a good relationship and he may want to talk to her about his future career goals," he said according to an email published by News Corp Australia.
