Runners attract renewed AFL scrutiny

Collingwood premiership captain Nick Maxwell, now a runner for GWS, might be in hot water with the AFL.

Nick Maxwell might be in hot water as the AFL has another look at what club runners do on the field during matches.

The 2010 Collingwood premiership captain is now the runner for GWS and he featured in the umpires' report after the one-point loss to Carlton.

The league's football operations department is reviewing video of the match.

Maxwell could be cautioned or even fined if the AFL decides he has breached the rules.

It is three years since the AFL cracked down on runners, amid concerns they were getting in the way of players and umpires.

Runners are no longer allowed within 25m of a stoppage and they must stay outside the 50m arc if there is a stoppage in that area.

Maxwell could be in trouble for the amount of time he spent on the ground during the game.

It has also emerged he positioned himself along the edge of the centre square for several Carlton kick-ins.

SEN commentator Danny Frawley, also a part-time coach at St Kilda, said Maxwell effectively was blocking space at kick-ins.

"If you actually watch the runners at the moment, they're just out there far too long. Sprint on, sprint off, (don't be) out there for five to six minutes at a time," Frawley said.

"(Maxwell) is just biting off too much at the moment. He's out there coaching, telling players where to run."
