Russian swimmer given two-year doping ban

A Russian swimmer has been handed a two-year ban for testing positive to a muscle-building anabolic agent last year.

Russian swimmer Sergei Makov has been banned for two years for doping and will miss the 2015 world championships at home.

Makov tested positive for ostarine, a muscle-building anabolic agent, at a World Cup in Moscow last October, said swimming's governing body, FINA.

Makov's ban runs through until October 11, 2015.

Russia hosts the worlds in Kazan from July 24 to August 9.

FINA disqualified Makov from all events since his positive test, and nullified his ranking points and medals.

Makov helped Russia set a world record at the Moscow meet, swimming the backstroke leg in the 4x50-meter mixed medley relay. The record stood for only one week.

Makov finished 2013 at No.26 in the 50 backstroke short-course world rankings.
