Ryder Cup format and recent history

The US have arrived with one of their strongest teams ever assembled for golf's prestigious Ryder Cup.

RYDER CUP FORMAT AND RECENT HISTORY:-

- The Ryder Cup is played every two years between 12-member teams from the US and Europe.

- It consists of five match-play sessions played over three days.

- Each of the first two days includes one four-match session of fourballs and one four-match session of foursomes. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches.

- In foursomes, golfers on the same team take alternate shots playing the same ball. Each hole is won by the team that completes the hole in the fewest shots.

- In a fourball match, all four golfers play their own ball throughout the round. Whichever player takes the least shots, wins the hole for their team.

- Each match is worth one point, with matches ending in a draw worth 1/2 point to each side.

- The first team to reach 14 points wins the Ryder Cup. If the matches end in a 14-14 draw, the team holding the Ryder Cup retains it.

- The US won the last Ryder Cup, 17-11, played at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska, Minnesota in 2016.

- Europe had won the three previous Ryder Cups, at Celtic Manor, Wales (2010), at Medinah, Illinois (2012) and at Gleneagles, Scotland (2014).

- The last US team to win on European soil was 1993 at the Belfry course in Warwickshire, England.
