Ryder marks return to cricket with century

Jesse Ryder has made an impressive comeback to cricket, scoring 117 for Otago against Wellington in his first innings back.

Jesse Ryder has marked his return to cricket with a century as Otago continued to pile on the runs against his former side, Wellington, in their season-opening Plunket Shield match.

Resuming at 48 not out on day two of the four-day fixture at the Basin Reserve, Ryder got to 117 before being caught by James Franklin off the bowling of Andy McKay.

The century, which contained 22 fours, was the left-hander's 14th in first-class cricket and he became the 11th player to score a ton on debut for Otago.

It was also the third of the innings for the Volts, who had been sent in to bat, with opener Aaron Redmond getting 154 and Michael Bracewell 107 on day one.

Ryder's dismissal left Otago at 5-485 and they went on to declare at 9-534.

The 29-year-old's return follows his completion of a six-month ban for testing positive to a banned substance in a weight-loss supplement.

As well as failing the drugs test, he was bashed outside a Christchurch bar in March.

Ryder has stated he wants to get back into the New Zealand cricket team during this summer's international programme.
