SA ALP promises $117.5m hospital upgrade

Labor has pledged a $117.5m revamp of an Adelaide hospital, including a new neonatal unit, if it is re-elected on March 15.

A re-elected South Australian government has promised a $117.5 million upgrade of Adelaide's Flinders Medical Centre.

The money will be spent on a new neonatal unit and new single-bed wards, Premier Jay Weatherill said on Thursday.

"We want to bring Flinders Medical Centre to a new world-class standard of single rooms and better patient accommodation," he said.

"We are already rebuilding every major metropolitan hospital and have already spent more than $167 million at the Flinders Medical Centre but we know more needs to be done.

"That is why we will invest $100 million to build two new wards and redevelop six existing wards as well as making the Emergency Department flow better during busy periods."

If Labor was re-elected on March 15, it also would spend $17.5 million to build a new neonatal unit, which would accommodate up to 50 cots compared to the current 35.

Opposition leader Steven Marshall committed the Liberals to expanding the Regional Development Fund from $1.6 million per year to $15 million if they win the election.

Treasury spokesman Iain Evans said the current fund was not enough to support SA regions from the APY Lands to Mount Gambier.

"Since it was first established in 1999, the fund has generated an estimated 5500 new jobs and over $1.4 billion in total project investment off the back of $36 million in government assistance," he said.

"Based on the fund's performance to date, the state Liberals' injection of funds will support up to 6000 extra jobs and $1.5 billion in additional regional investment over the forward estimates."
