SA budget to cut surgery delays

The South Australian budget on Tuesday will include an extra $45 million to cut elective surgery waiting lists.

The South Australian budget will include $45 million to cut elective surgery waiting lists.

Health Minister Stephen Wade says 1300 patients are overdue to undergo surgical procedures.

"More than 1000 of those patients do not even have a scheduled date for surgery as too many wait too long," Mr Wade said on Friday.

The minister said the extra funds to be allocated in Tuesday's budget would be provided over the next two years to cut waiting lists at both the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Flinders Medical Centre.

SA Health will also consider reactivating the old Repatriation Hospital and using some country hospitals for surgery.

The budget will also include $5 million for an extra 2700 colonoscopies over the next nine months to be conducted at private hospitals.
