An Adelaide transport company has been forced to hand over more than $10,000 in unpaid wages, the Fair Work Ombudsman says.

Chryss Enterprises Pty Ltd, which trades as JC Mini Buses and transports special-needs students for the state's education department, was found to have wrongly classified employees as contractors and underpaid at least five drivers.

The men were paid as little as $14.40 an hour when they should have received up to $22.24 an hour.

One driver was paid less than half of his public holiday rate, worth more than $50 an hour.

Chryss also made illegal deductions from drivers' wages without providing an explanation, and failed to pay annual leave and document employment records adequately.

The company first came to the ombudsman's attention last year as part of an inquiry into allegations of sham contracting by transport companies.

Chryss was one of nine mini-bus businesses to receive letters of caution over illegal contracting arrangements.

When contacted by AAP on Tuesday, a Chryss employee said he had no knowledge of the Fair Work Ombudsman finding and declined to comment further.
