A major South Australian mining company has signed agreements with five Chinese steel companies.

A South Australian mining company has clinched agreements with Chinese steel companies with a view to signing future supply deals.

Iron Road on Tuesday signed agreements with five Chinese steel companies to potentially provide ore from a major iron project on the state's Eyre Peninsula.

Managing director Andrew Stocks says the memorandums of understanding mark a significant step towards long-term supply agreements.

"Chinese steel companies will conduct technical evaluations of the Central Ryre project to verify the commercial and technical merits of the high-quality product," he said on Wednesday.
