SA nuclear inquiry kicks off

South Australia's Royal Commission into the nuclear fuel cycle has kicked off. This is what has happened so far.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S ROYAL COMMISSION INTO THE NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE

WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR:

* Commissioner Kevin Scare has begun a period of community consultation. Meetings will be held across SA, starting with Mt Gambier on April 20.

* Mr Scarce has issued the first of four issues papers dealing with exploration and mining of nuclear-related material. Others will deal with enrichment of uranium, waste management and nuclear power generation.

* Mr Scarce will visit countries involved in nuclear power including France, Britain and Japan.

* Mr Scarce has announced a five-member advisory panel including experts in science, medicine and the environment.

* The commission will engage with indigenous communities to hear their views.

* The deadline for submissions has been set at July 24, 2015.

* Commissioner Scare has revealed his "self-imposed" deadline for reporting to the state government as May 6, 2016.
