SA open to talks on 2017 world swim titles

Australia is open to talks if asked for help in staging the 2017 world swimming championships abandoned by Mexico, says Swimming Australia

Swimming Australia says its open to talks if governing body FINA seeks help to stage the 2017 world championships after Mexico abandoned its host role.

The biennial world championships fall a year before the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, potentially providing a lead in to Games.

However, Swimming Australia (SA) said on Friday the cost and relatively short time left made it "unlikely" Australia would put its hand up to take over.

Mexico announced on Thursday it was pulling out of staging the event in Guadalajara due to public spending cuts, with the country's finances hard hit by the falling oil price.

"It is unlikely (Australia will actively seek the world titles) given the required investment required by many partners to deliver an event of this magnitude successfully and the relatively short timeframe," said an SA spokesman.

"However, we would be open to having discussions with FINA should there be interest in Australia stepping in to assist.

"There is no doubt that we have the venues and expertise to host such an event, evidenced in Melbourne hosting the event in 2007."

The Mexican government had already spent $US9.5 million in preparation but said it hoped cancelling Guadalajara 2017 would save the country around $US85 million ($A109 million).

The 2015 world swimming championships are to be staged in Kazan in Russia, while the 2013 edition was in Barcelona, Spain.
