SA proposes new Indigenous governance model

South Australia has floated an idea to give more control back to Aboriginal communities.

It's proposing communities establish Regional Authorities to coordinate their different organisations under one umbrella.

It's a model that was first developed by the Ngarrindjeri community to heal divisions in the wake of the controversial Hindmarsh Island affair, where community members were pitted against one another in a dispute over a bridge development.

Premier Jay Weatherill says the Ngarrindjeri Regional Authority has given the community a strong, united voice that's earned the confidence and respect of government.

Speaking at a NAIDOC event, Premier Weatherill told Karen Ashford it's time Aboriginal people were given more financial and governance control - if they're ready for it.
