Sitting South Australian Labor Senator Anne McEwen says she's not taking her re-election for granted after being given the winnable but testing fourth spot on the party's SA Senate ticket.
Penny Wong was recently confirmed as the lead candidate ahead of former senator Don Farrell, who will be making a return to politics, and another sitting senator in Alex Gallacher.
That left Senator McEwen in fourth spot going into an election where the major parties are expected to face a significant challenge from independent Senator Nick Xenophon.
Labor currently has three Senate seats in SA with the Liberals holding five and the Greens two.
The remaining two are in the hands of Senator Xenophon and Family First's Bob Day.
For Labor to take four spots at the July 2 poll, either the Liberals or the Greens would need to lose a seat or Senator Day be bumped from the parliament.
Senator McEwen said regardless of her spot on the ticket, it remained a privilege to be pre-selected by Labor.
"No politician takes for granted whether or not they're going to be re-elected," she told reporters on Wednesday.
"Like everybody in the Labor team I'll be working really hard to make sure not only myself, but all of my Labor colleagues are re-elected."
