A federal budget decision to axe funding for essential services like power, water, roads and rubbish collection in Aboriginal communities has been labelled cruel by South Australia's Labor government.

SA Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ian Hunter says communities in his state will lose $9.6 million in annual funding from next year.

He says this will effectively "turn the lights out" in remote places such as the APY Lands in the state's far north west.

Mr Hunter told Karen Ashford the state can't afford to pick up the cost, and people could be forced from their homes.
