SA to host international space event

The International Astronautical Congress will be held in Adelaide in 2017.

Adelaide has been chosen to host a large-scale international astronautical event in 2017.

South Australia trumped Bremen, Orlando, Istanbul and Dublin to host the 68th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which will attract 3000 delegates to the Adelaide Convention Centre.

It is second time the IAC has been hosted in Australia.

Acting Premier John Rau said the September 2017 event was the most significant conference Adelaide had ever secured.

"The International Astronautical Congress is a new frontier for the convention business in Adelaide," he said in a statement on Sunday.

"Adelaide has a strong history in space industries and research, and is perfectly placed to host one of the world's most prestigious conventions that is estimated to generate more than $18m in economic activity and create more than 150 jobs."

Adelaide was announced the 2017 host in Toronto, where the 65th congress has just wrapped up.
