SA toddler kidnap accused refused bail

An Adelaide couple accused of kidnapping their two-year-old son have appeared in court after being extradited from Malaysia.

An Adelaide mother and father have been remanded in custody after facing court accused of kidnapping their two-year-old son and smuggling him to Malaysia.

The 27-year-old man and the 23-year-old woman, who cannot be named, were extradited from Malaysia and appeared in the Adelaide magistrates court on Monday.

They are charged with an aggravated count of unlawfully removing a child from a jurisdiction.

They applied for bail but the magistrate remanded them in custody until Friday and ordered a home detention report.

Malaysian authorities surrendered the pair on Friday following extradition requests made by the Australian government on behalf of South Australian authorities.

The boy was under the guardianship of the Minister for Education and Child Development, but lived with his grandparents.

Police will allege the grandparents handed the boy over to his parents on August 2, but failed to notify police for more than 24 hours that the boy had been taken.

The grandparents, aged 64 and 52, appeared in court last week charged with aiding and abetting the parents.

They are due back in court on December 16.
