An increase in Australia's southern bluefin tuna catch will provide certainty for the industry, the South Australian government says.
The International Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna has increased the tuna catch quota for the next four years.
Its meeting in Adelaide this week lifted the annual global quota to 12,499 tonnes and Australia's allocation to 5151 tonnes, an increase of 453 tonnes.
South Australia's tuna fishing fleet, based at Port Lincoln, will catch most of the Australian quota.
Fisheries Minister Gail Gago said the increased provided certainty for an industry that was crucial to the state economy and to Eyre Peninsula communities.
"We have worked closely with industry to assist in increasing efficiency and ensuring the future viability of the fishery and the new quota will further increase confidence," Ms Gago said in a statement.
Southern bluefin tuna is South Australia's largest single aquaculture sector with exports worth $153 million in 2012/13.
