Expeditioners who were stranded on board an Australian icebreaker, which has run aground in Antarctica, have been transferred to safety.

The Australian Antarctic Division, which charters the Aurora Australis, on Friday afternoon said 37 people had been transported to nearby Mawson Station and efforts will now be made to refloat the vessel.

"P&O Maritime crew will remain on the ship and attempt to move it off the rocks at West Arm in Horseshoe Harbour using the ships ballast system and work boats," the Division said in a statement.
