Regulators have again admonished management at Gina Rinehart's Roy Hill iron ore mine over safety concerns.

Western Australia's Department of Mines and Petroleum has issued the project operators with improvement notices, which set a date by which breaches of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act must be remedied.

The breaches relate to elevated work platforms and working at heights.

"Samsung C&T and its contractors responded immediately to the situation to continue to maintain a safe system of work for all employees on the project," Roy Hill said in a statement.

"Roy Hill continues to work with Samsung and its contractors to provide a safe work environment."

In January, the department issued two prohibition notices to Roy Hill regarding cranes and elevated working platforms.

The more serious notices meant the company had to stop the activity or remove the safety hazards until they were remedied.

Days later, a crane fell over during a test supervised by an independent plant inspector, who was assessing the competency of the equipment and operator.

Roy Hill chief executive Barry Fitzgerald responded to that controversy by saying there had been "serious issues" around safe lifting and crane operations undertaken by head contractor Samsung C&T and Leighton Construction at the processing plant construction site.

He said that was not acceptable and "a step change" in lifting operations was being sought.

The project is more than 86 per cent complete and is scheduled to begin exports about the end of September.
