SAfrica explosives truck accident kills 5

Five people are dead and three injured after a crash between two trucks in South Africa, one of which was carrying explosives.

Four South African police officers and a driver have been killed when a truck carrying blasting cartridges exploded after a crash with another truck, police said.

The explosives truck was rear-ended by another heavy vehicle on a road near the northern town of Polokwane in the early hours of the morning on Thursday.

"When the police arrived at the scene the explosives truck caught fire and exploded," said police spokeswoman Ronel Otto.

"Four of our colleagues died at the scene, and three others were injured and taken to hospital."

She said the driver of the other truck also died but the driver of the truck carrying the explosives survived.

"At this stage we don't know the owners of the explosives truck or where it was headed," said Otto, adding that blasting cartridges were normally used in the mining industry.

Zambian transport company Rainbow later said it was the owner of the truck that was rear-ended.

"Rainbow expresses its deep sadness and extends its sincere condolences to the families of the policemen and the driver," the firm's South African representative Michael Felton said in a statement.

The company had launched an internal investigation along with a police probe, he said, without elaborating on the truck's cargo.

Three other cars were damaged in the explosion.
