World champion Peter Sagan unleashed his powerful sprint to overcome Wouter Wippert and Dylan Groenewegen and win the opening stage of the Tour of California.
The Slovakian superstar quietly made his way through the peloton towards the end of 175km stage which began and finished in San Diego.
He won by a half-tyre length for his record-extending 14th stage victory.
There was only one serious climb, midway through the route.
Sagan once more earned the overall leader's jersey, which he kept to the finish last year.
