Saint Lenny Hayes ponders his future

St Kilda great Lenny Hayes says he'll take some time to consider his future after playing his last AFL match on Sunday, but wants to stay involved in footy.

St Kilda great Lenny Hayes reckons he'll be signing up at Centrelink on Monday.

But rival AFL clubs will cut him off at the pass as they circle the now-retired footballer.

"I have to head down to Centrelink on Monday and sign up," Hayes joked after his 297th and last AFL game on Sunday.

"In probably the next two or three weeks, I'll make a decision.

"I'd love to stay involved in the game in some capacity."

St Kilda have sounded out Hayes remaining at the club in some capacity, but he's non-committal.

"The club has been fantastic but I have said to them all along I have to make the best decision for my family," he said.

Hayes's family helped tip his emotions over the edge on Sunday when chaired off Adelaide Oval after a 79-point loss to the Crows.

"I was pretty spent," he said.

"Because I announced it (retirement) six or eight weeks ago, I haven't been emotional at all.

"But when I was coming off the ground - I have played a lot of football with some of those guys and you're looking them in the eye.

"And then I looked over and my mum had a tear in her eye and that sort of set me off.

"How do you sum up 16 years? I have had a great run, met some great people. But I was a little bit emotional towards the end."
