St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt has been cleared of skull fractures but remains in hospital following Saturday's 46-point AFL loss to Adelaide.

Riewoldt was knocked out in a clash of heads with wingman Brodie Smith in the Crows' 18.11 (119) to 10.13 (73) triumph at Adelaide Oval.

Adelaide's victory was soured by a suspected season-ending knee injury to defender Matthew Jaensch.

Scans are expected to show Jaensch tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee when attempting a basic change of direction during the Crows' win.

The injury toll overshadowed the contest, with Riewoldt to spend Saturday night in an Adelaide hospital under observation.

The Saints star was rushed there by ambulance after the back of Smith's head cracked into Riewoldt's face in the first quarter.

"He will stay in hospital overnight just for observation purposes but my understanding is he has been cleared of any structural damage," St Kilda coach Alan Richardson said.

Richardson also missed youngster Jack Lonie, who was concussed moments earlier when cleaned up by Adelaide second-gamer Jake Lever.

The losses of Riewoldt and Lonie compounded pre-game withdrawals for St Kilda of midfielders Leigh Montagna (hamstring) and Jarryn Geary (thigh).

Montagna took his place in the warm-up but was withdrawn some five minutes before play as the Saints slumped to their fifth loss in seven outings.

St Kilda jumped Adelaide early and led 19-1 inside 10 minutes.

But the Crows, with a free-flowing forward line led by six-goal hero Eddie Betts, then piled on 14 of the next 18 goals en route to a fifth win of the season.

Betts had superb support in attack from captain Taylor Walker, Tom Lynch and livewire Charlie Cameron - they potted three goals each.

Adelaide also gained ascendancy in the midfield through the likes of Scott Thompson, who collected a game-high 35 disposals, and Matt Crouch (27 possessions).

But the blows to Jaensch and Smith continue an unwanted theme for Crows coach Phil Walsh, who had 13 players on his injury list last week.

"This is the caper we're in," Walsh said.

The Crows travel to play Greater Western Sydney next Saturday while St Kilda host West Coast the same day.
