A two-year contract extension means Alan Richardson should become St Kilda's second-longest serving AFL coach.
The Saints have backed Richardson to continue their resurgence, extending his contract to the end of the 2020 season.
The deal was to be announced at Friday night's club best and fairest function.
Richardson has coached the Saints for 88 games in his four seasons at the club.
The legendary Allan Jeans, St Kilda's only premiership coach, has the club record of 333 games and Grant Thomas' reign last decade has him second on 123.
The contract extension means Richardson is poised to overtake Thomas late in the 2019 season.
St Kilda have not made the finals since 2011, but they have shown improvement every season under Richardson.
When they belted eventual premiers Richmond in round 16, the Saints were 9-6 and their finals drought looked over.
But they stumbled badly in the home straight and finished 11th, a game and percentage outside the top eight.
Despite the poor end to this season, it is no surprise that the Saints have reaffirmed their faith in the 52-year-old.
