After five successful years as England's bowling coach, including two winning Ashes campaigns, David Saker is returning home as the new coach of the Victorian Bushrangers.

Saker has signed a three-year deal to replace Greg Shipperd, who was controversially moved on despite masterminding Victoria's triumphant 2014-15 Sheffield Shield campaign.

Cricket Victoria chief executive Tony Dodemaide said Saker - who won high praise for his role in helping England win the Ashes in 2010-11 and 2013 - was the stand-out candidate to replace Shipperd.

"With David's growing reputation as a world-class coach, built through his previous assistant role with Victoria and advanced during his time on the world stage with the England team, the board had no hesitation in endorsing the appointment," Dodemaide said in a statement.

"We look forward to David building on the success we had in the Sheffield Shield this season, as well as producing players for Australian squads.

"We would also like to thank the England and Wales Cricket Board, who have allowed David to end his contract with them earlier to enable him to take up this career progression opportunity and start his tenure with Victoria at the end of the month."

Recently-retired David Hussey has been named as Victoria's new batting coach and Mick Lewis has been reappointed as bowling coach.

The 48-year-old Saker, who claimed 209 wickets in his successful playing career for Victoria from 1995-2000 before moving to Tasmania and then turning his hand to coaching, will also take the helm of the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL.
