Salmonella linked to Melbourne hotel: report

Victoria's Department of Health is investigating a salmonella outbreak that reportedly affected dozens who dined at a top Melbourne hotel.

At least 34 people have fallen ill, with six treated in hospital, after a salmonella outbreak at a top Melbourne hotel.

News Corp Australia reports the outbreak occurred at the Langham hotel's high tea on July 11 and 12.

The Herald Sun says 66 people who attended the high teas have been tracked down by the Department of Health, and 34 cases of salmonella have been identified so far.

The department has confirmed six people have been treated in hospital, but did not release their conditions.

The Age newspaper reports the Langham hotel is co-operating with investigators and is contacting guests directly.

Managing director Ben Sington told The Age it was hotel policy to freeze food samples and these samples had been provided to investigators, along with detailed food logs.

"As the safety and well-being of the guests and colleagues are of the highest priority, the hotel has extensive protocols in place to ensure food safety," he told The Age.

Salmonellosis cases have increased by 130 per cent in the past six years, hitting 3693 cases in 2014, the Herald Sun reported.
