Former NRL star Sam Burgess has scored his first try in rugby union.

Playing at blindside flanker, Burgess crossed just before halftime to put Bath 20-0 up in what became a 44-5 win over London Irish on Monday.

The 26-year-old Englishman had an earlier try effort ruled out after it was deemed to have been held up following a scrum.

Burgess joined Bath from NRL champions South Sydney and has made four first-team appearances, mainly at centre, with his debut from the bench against Harlequins last month.

His obvious potential has attracted the attention of England coach Stuart Lancaster and next year's home Rugby World Cup is an obvious goal if he can adapt well enough to his new code in that time.

Richard Lane scored a hat-trick for Bath with Horacio Agulla, Darren Atkins, Marcus Beer and Callum Waters also crossing. Gary Johnston scored London Irish A's only points of the night after the break.

Burgess was instrumental in setting up Atkins' try as he broke the Irish line and offloaded to Olly Woodburn, who showed quick hands to get the ball to Atkins for his debut try in the corner.

Burgess then crossed for his own score as he tracked Will Homer's burst and was on his shoulder in support, collecting the ball before powering towards the line unopposed.

Irish were unable to get a foothold in the game and Bath wrapped it up with another 24 points after the break.

Burgess later wrote on Twitter: "Gr8 turn out @ the rec tonight for the A team match. Good team win, some talented boys".
