Sam Newman lashed over TV flash

TV personality Sam Newman has sent mixed messages about exposing his genitals on the AFL Footy Show, refusing to say sorry before later making an apology.

Sam Newman has issued a reserved apology for flashing his genitals on national television after being "admonished" by the Nine Network.

Newman initially told Triple M radio on Friday he didn't know "why you would bother apologising", claiming it was inadvertent and not offensive.

"I'm not apologising," Newman said.

Newman was more contrite when speaking on 3AW.

"Yep, I am apologising," he said.

"I have been admonished as a result of it.

"I am not sure why I'm apologising but, if people have been offended by it, I can assure you that is the reason," he added, having tried to contextualise the incident.

The former Geelong ruckman exposed himself on Thursday night's AFL Footy Show during a skit about the meningitis outbreak at Port Adelaide.

The 69-year-old took to the stage during the show - which was broadcast live from Adelaide - wearing unbuttoned Port pyjamas.

As he was rolled off a hospital bed by a high-skirted nurse, he bared himself to the crowd and viewers.

The Footy Show star explained that when he changed into the gown, his clothes were taken backstage by the "wardrobe people", so he could not find his underwear.

Images and videos of Newman spread quickly across social media.

His privates have previously featured on The Footy Show at least once, when he was "dacked" by Shane Crawford in 2001.

"I have been severely reprimanded in the past by the (Nine Network) management and I have been severely reprimanded today (Friday) and last night," Newman told 3AW.

"I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I'm smart enough to know recidivists are not welcome at the station and I'm on thin ice."

Nine released a statement saying the matter had been dealt with internally.

"The Footy Show team and the Nine Network unreservedly apologise to anybody who was offended," it said.

Newman played 300 games for Geelong from 1964-80.
