Sam Tomkins in injury doubt for Warriors

Tight hamstrings have forced fullback Sam Tomkins out of Warriors training and under a cloud for their NRL-opener against Newcastle.

Injured fullback Sam Tomkins will travel to Newcastle but is in doubt for the Warriors' NRL season-opening game.

English international Tomkins didn't train on Wednesday because of tightness in both hamstrings.

Coach Andrew McFadden wants to leave a decision on Tomkins' fitness until as close as possible to kickoff on Saturday.

"He's definitely in doubt. He pulled up a bit sore the other day so we'll give him right until kickoff to prove his fitness so we're still very hopeful there," McFadden said.

Tuimoala Lolohea trained at fullback and is likely to fill that role if Tomkins is ruled out.

Lolohea was named to start at wing so his shift would leave an opening for Ken Maumolo to make his debut.

A start for Maumolo would lift the number of debutants in the squad to four, alongside centre Solomone Kata and bench props Albert Vete and Sam Lisone.
