Australian actor Sam Worthington has joined the cast of adventure movie Everest, based on the true story of the deadly 1996 Mount Everest disaster.

The Avatar star joins the high-profile cast of Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, John Hawkes and House of Cards star Robin Wright, deadline.com reports.

Everest tells the story of two different expeditions which are trying to reach the summit when they get caught in a blizzard storm.

Worthington will play Guy Cotter, a scaling expert from New Zealand.

Eight people were killed in the 1996 disaster, including experienced climber and guide Scott Fisher, to be played by Gyllenhaal.

Everest is due to hit cinemas in September 2015.
