Sandow to captain Eels at Auckland Nines

Halfback Chris Sandow will captain Parramatta at the Auckland Nines rugby league tournament.

Parramatta NRL coach Brad Arthur has named halfback Chris Sandow as his captain for this weekend's Auckland Nines tournament.

It is a show of faith in 25 year-old Sandow who has had an up and down three seasons since joining Parramatta from Souths in 2012.

Off contract at the end of the season, it will mark the start of a career-defining year for Sandow who is regarded as one of the more gifted players in the game but has battled with his weight, form and personal issues.

Recruits Brad Takairangi and Reece Robinson have been included in the Eels' 18-man squad and are set to make their club debuts for the nines.

Parramatta are grouped in the same pool as Newcastle, Manly and St George Illawarra.

The Eels start their nines campaign against the Sea Eagles.

The tournament kicks off on Saturday at Eden Park.

Parramatta Auckland Nines squad:

Will Hopoate, Semi Radradra, John Folau, Brad Takairangi, Reece Robinson, Corey Norman, Chris Sandow (capt), Junior Paulo, Kaysa Pritchard, Peni Terepo, Manu Ma'u, Tepai Moeroa, Joseph Paulo, David Gower, Kenny Edwards, Halauafu Lavaka, Pauli Pauli, Luke Kelly.
