Sansung to improve smartphones, phablets

Samsung Electronics is developing updated versions of its smartphones and hybrid phablets to compete with Apple.

Samsung Electronics is developing new versions of its smartphones and hybrid phablets with more features to compete with Apple.

The new models are expected to be released later this year.

Following the success of the smartphone Galaxy S6 Edge, with a display that curves on both ends, Samsung is manufacturing Galaxy Edge S6 Plus, a phablet with a bigger screen, according to analysts consulted by Soth Korea's Yonhap.

According to the agency, Samsung recently registered 'S6 EDGE+' at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The company is expected to showcase its new tablet, Galaxy Note 5, at the IFA fair in Berlin in September.

Samsung will also introduce improvements in 'S Pen', its digital pen for Galaxy Note as it can possibly be detached with a voice order, according to experts.

With these advances, the tech giant seeks to compete with Apple's new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus models, which could be released around the end of the year, and would feature improved camera and better hardware, among others.

Samsung accounted for 24.1 per cent of global sales for smartphones in the first quarter of the year, followed by Apple, with 17.7 per cent.

However, since 2014, the South Korean company has lost weight in the smartphone market due to the lukewarm reception of the Galaxy S5 against the high popularity enjoyed by iPhone 5 and 6 among high-range phones, and the emergence of Chinese brands Xiaomi and Huawei among mid and low-range ones.
