Santa spreads cheer at Vic hospital

It was an action-packed Christmas Day with celebrations across Victoria, but two families had their presents stolen from their trees.

Santa has spread Christmas cheer across the world, stopping into a Melbourne hospital to deliver gifts to seriously sick children.

Young patients at the Royal Children's Hospital were delighted to have a visit from the jolly fellow, who stopped off at each ward.

Across the state of Victoria, Christmas Day was celebrated with fine weather and merriment.

There was no rain recorded, with Melbourne reaching a top temperature of 31.8C.

Charities gave out meals for the less fortunate on Christmas morning with more than 300 hampers distributed.

A Melbourne man was lucky to escape with his life after he was pulled out of his burning home in Whittlesea on Christmas morning.

And two Victorian families suffered what police described as "an unthinkable act of heartlessness" when their presents were stolen overnight.

But their neighbours in the community of Wodonga banded together to restore some festive spirit by donating gifts to them.

Victorian church leaders have issued Christmas messages, urging people to open their hearts to those who are without and to acknowledge victims of clergy abuse.

Melbourne's Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart called on the church to reach out to victims of sexual abuse as part of his Christmas address.
