SANZAR judiciary busy with Sharks, Chiefs

Three Chiefs players and two Sharks will face the SANZAR judiciary after the brutal 12-11 win by the Sharks in Durban.

Three Chiefs players and two Sharks are under scrutiny from SANZAR's citing commissioner after the weekend round of Super Rugby matches.

Chiefs Skipper Liam Messam has been cited for an alleged dangerous tackle in the 18th minute of their 11-12 loss to the Sharks in Durban early on Sunday morning.

The citing commissioner who reviewed the match footage said the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

Three red cards were issued during the match - Sharks captain Bismarck du Plessis was marched for his kick to the head of opposition No.8 Michael Leitch, while midfielder Frans Steyn was red-carded for a tip-tackle on Chiefs first-five Aaron Cruden.

Chiefs hooker Hika Elliot was first to go after 15 minutes for his shoulder charge on prop Tendai Mtawarira during a clean-out at a ruck.

Du Plessis, Steyn and Elliot will all face the SANZAR judiciary.

Chiefs wing Tom Marshall also earned the citing commissioner's attention for a dangerous tackle in the closing stages of the Sharks game.

Marshall was issued with a warning for a dangerous tackle on Sharks halfback Cobus Reinach.

Referee Angus Gardner awarded a penalty at the time, but the citing commissioner issued a warning after viewing the match footage.

A warning is given for foul play incidents that are very close to, but in the citing commissioner's opinion don't meet the red card threshold.
