Saturday is set to be D-Day for injured NSW rake Robbie Farah in his desperate bid to play in State of Origin III.

Farah had hand surgery on Tuesday, before heading the Blues Coffs Harbour base on Wednesday night. He didn't train on Thursday, with back-up rake Michael Ennis filling in as coach Laurie Daley put his team through their paces.

Friday is a rest day for NSW, with Farah looking to return to training on Saturday when the Blues amp up their preparation ahead of the Origin decider in Brisbane on Wednesday.

"It would be important to do some training before such a big game," Farah said.

"Coming into game two with my shoulder injury I felt it was important to train. One of the reasons I felt so confident going into the game was that I had had that week at training and I would like to do the same this time around.

"It is my hand, my passing has to be good, my grip strength when I tackle, I need to be sure that I can do what I normally do and I can go out there and not let the boys down and continue to play my role for the team.

"It is one thing getting out there it is another performing to the best of my ability."

If he doesn't recover in time, Farah is confident Ennis can do the job for the Blues.

"If he does come into the side he's an experienced player, he'll be fine," he said.

"He's been here before obviously. That's why he's been called in to train with us and the fact he's been here before is a massive boost.

"It'd be tough to bring in a debutant going into a decider up at Suncorp. It's such a daunting place. The fact he's been here before makes it a smooth transition if he does get called upon.

"But again I haven't given up hope that I'll still be out there Wednesday with the boys."
