SBS gets five gongs at multicultural awards

SBS has won five awards at the NSW Premier's Multicultural Media Awards, including best investigative story of the year, best feature story and best article on multiculturalism.

An investigation by SBS journalist Naomi Selvaratnam into the blackmail of rape victims has been awarded the best investigative story of the year at the NSW Premier's Multicultural Media Awards.

The award was one of five won by SBS at the annual awards night, which was launched in 2012 to recognise journalism at multicultural media outlets across the state.

Ms Selvaratnam's story, 'Blackmailed: Sexual assault victims held to ransom with footage of their rape', tells the story of two young Australian women who were raped, and threatened with the release of video footage of their attacks.

The story was also awarded best human interest story at the New York Festival’s International Radio Awards and has been nominated for a young Walkley award.

Other SBS stories to be recognised at the Multicultural Media Awards included an episode of Dateline called Unholy Matrimony, which focused on a right-wing Israeli group that is trying to prevent marriages between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East.

SBS Radio's Hindi program was awarded best feature of the year, for a story by executive producer Kumud Merani called 'The Story Untold', which explored links between Aboriginal Australians and India’s first tribal inhabitants.

The German language program on SBS Radio was awarded with best radio story of the year, for a report by Wolfgang Müller into German involvement in the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme.

SBS was also recognised for the best use of online and digital media at the awards multicultural awards night.
