Small Business Secrets and SBS Learn have collaborated to launch a series of new online educational resources to help students understand the opportunities and challenges of running a business.
Whitney Fitzsimmons, Executive Producer of Small Business Secrets, said, “The new SBS Learn business-focused resources will help provide teachers with the tools to put business learning into a real-life context. There’s really no one-size-fits-all approach to running a business and each of the individual case studies highlight the unique challenges and opportunities for budding entrepreneurs.”
Teachers Jane Wong, Melissa Losco and Mark Swainson from Sydney’s Tara Anglican School for Girls, collaborated with SBS Learn and Small Business Secrets to design the interactive classroom resources which are focused on educating high school students around entrepreneurship, business plan essentials and overcoming business challenges.
The teachers selected ten case studies from the Small Business Secrets program, including Sam Bashiry’s journey from a refugee to the founder of a multimillion-dollar broadband company, and how Carolyn Creswell scaled her muesli business Carman’s Kitchen onto supermarket shelves around the world.

The Australian curriculum and learning outcomes from Economics and Business studies were also used to ensure the lessons are practical and relevant.
Jane Wong, Social Sciences Teacher, Tara Anglican School for Girls, said: “SBS Learn features a range of relevant resources that add another dimension to textbook learning. As a teacher, it’s great to have had the opportunity to develop these resources first-hand with SBS, which will be invaluable in helping to demonstrate to students just how diverse running a business can be.”
