A million students are sitting the NAPLAN tests in schools across the country.

Children in years three, five, seven and nine begin three days of national standard testing on Tuesday.

They will start with two tests, one in language conventions and one in writing, and they should be done by lunchtime.

Reading follows on Wednesday and numeracy on Thursday.

The man in charge of the tests, Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority chief executive Rob Randall, says it is normal for children to feel a bit nervous about NAPLAN but they just test what kids should be learning in the classroom anyway.

The annual national literacy and numeracy tests help parents and teachers keep track of where students are up to, and how well they have achieved over time.
