Adam Scott will use this week's World Golf Championships to tighten up his target golf as he prepares for a big finish to his season.
A winner of this $A9.82 million, no-cut WGC-Bridgestone Invitational just two years ago, the Masters champion says he';s quickly adjusting back from bump and run links golf to American-style target golf and is ready for a huge two months.
Scott was disappointed with his finish at the British Open where he held the lead midway through the final round but took solace from knowing Phil Mickelson's winning late burst would have taken something phenomenal to top.
He has already moved his focus to this week and next week's US PGA Championship.
Scott usually spends the week prior to a major in deep reconnaissance at the venue but obviously cannot do so this time due to scheduling.
"This event is a really good lead in to the PGA Championship for me because obviously I have had about of month of concentrating on links golf and now I'm straight back into more target golf here with soft conditions," Scott said.
"That is what I think we can expect at Oak Hill so playing is actually a good thing for me this week and I can use it to really see where things are at and fix anything before Thursday at the PGA.
"I am here to win this week and that would be the best preparation for next week, getting in the mix again and executing while you are there."
Scott goes out early in round one at Firestone Country Club and will be looking to start hot, much the same as he did in 2011.
With countryman Jason Day setting an early pace with a seven-under 63, Scott came out in the afternoon with a blistering 62 to kick start what would be a four-shot win.
"It's a course where if someone plays well they will post a low score. I always feel it's a much nicer feeling if you play great Thursday because you feel like you're in it immediately," said Scott.
While some players have been talking of fatigue at this time of year Scott said his limited schedule of just 10 tournaments thus far has him fresh and raring to go towards the FedEx Cup playoffs.
"I have planned to be fresh at this time of year by not playing too much in the early stages so if you hear me say I'm tired you can slap me," Scott told AAP.
"I shouldn't have a problem with that. Two really good weeks here will certainly make the FedEx Cup playoffs easier."
Jason Day, Brett Rumford and Daniel Popovic join Scott in the field headlined by seven-time winner Tiger Woods.
