Coach Chris Scott had a blunt message for Geelong's senior players when their AFL season was on the edge - show some courage.

The Cats staged a stunning turnaround on Friday night, mauling Sydney by 59 points in a major semi-final upset.

It came a week after they were no match for Richmond in their qualifying final.

Two days after the Tigers loss, Scott and the Geelong player leadership group were in a meeting that lasted all of 10 minutes.

"It was short and sharp - (the message) was probably just ... 'grow some balls and fight on'," Duncan told ABC radio

"That's exactly what was mentioned ... the coach was driving it pretty hard.

"The coach's messaging throughout the whole week was really good and we lived up to our end (on Friday night)."

Captain Joel Selwood has hailed how Scott handled the the buildup to the Sydney win, calling the coach their best player.

Scott deflected praise for the game-breaking move of Patrick Dangerfield into attack, saying it was a collective decision by the Cats coaches.

Duncan was high among Geelong's best against Sydney with an outstanding game in the midfield.

He also took it upon himself last Sunday to lighten the mood around the club after the Richmond loss.

"I was trying to be really upbeat for that day because there were some sombre looks, people looking down at the floor," he said.

"I was just trying to make a fool of myself to try and get everyone up."
