Adam Scott has missed his first major championship cut in more than four years at the US PGA Championship, putting his FedEx Cup playoff push under pressure.
Scott shot 76-75 at Whistling Straits over the opening two rounds to finish at seven over, well off the pace and ensuring his first major weekend off since the 2011 US Open.
It was an inglorious end to the anchored putter era at majors for the Queenslander, who still had one win at the 2013 Masters, two seconds, a third, a fourth and two fifths amongst 11 top 10s in the 20 majors he played with it.
"I just played poorly, simple as that. And obviously couldn't recover from some of the spots I was in with doubles and triples," Scott lamented.
"The course is extreme, you just have to play well. It's a major, there are no two ways about it, it's very hard to have a good score at a major with some loose stuff in your bag. You can get away with one or two, but not four or five.
"This year has just been a lot of inconsistencies compared to the last few for me with everything. Hasn't been as solid as I would like.
"The more you can be consistent and solid, the easier it is, even on your bad days, to just get a score done. Unfortunately this year there have just been too many loose days and loose scores and these were two of them."
At 90th on the US PGA tour FedEx Cup standings, Scott will make the top 125 for the playoffs in two weeks, but it no certainty to survive past the opening week, when it gets knocked down to the top 100.
He is really under the pump to get through to the Tour Championship for the top 30 players, where $US10 million ($A13.6 million) is on offer for the season winner.
He has been at East Lake Golf Club the last five years running.
"The good part about the playoffs when you are in this position is if you just get to the Barclays (opening week) you can win the whole thing," Scott said.
"The playoffs is about how you play in those four weeks, so as long as I can get there I am a chance."
Scott also confirmed caddie Steve Williams, who he coaxed out of retirement for the last three majors this year, will not be on the bag at the Barclays in two weeks and a replacement is yet to be decided on.
