Scott slides outside world top 10

With a dismal putting Sunday Adam Scott will slide out of the world top 10, less than a year since being No.1.

Adam Scott has produced possibly the worst putting performances of his career and falls out of world golf's top 10 less than a year after becoming No.1.

Australia's 2013 Masters champion plummeted down the leaderboard with an abysmal effort with his once-trusty broomstick putter on the final day at the Players Championship in Florida.

While his three-over-par 75 is nowhere near his worst score on the TPC Sawgrass course - the 2004 champion has an 80 and 82 on his resume - Scott will want to quickly forget Sunday.

He fell from four shots off the lead overnight to finish nine off the pace and tied 38th after producing five three-putt greens and countless short misses.

Slated to drop to 11th in the world this week, the slide is worrying for the 34-year-old who just under a year ago climbed to No.1 and solidified top spot with a win in Texas - his last triumph.

Maybe the impending banning of his anchored putting stroke could be a blessing if these woes continue, although he also struggled with a short putter in two of his first three tournaments of 2015.

Scott three-putted for bogey on the sixth hole from 11 feet, was 16 feet away on the fringe on the ninth yet took four putts to get down for double bogey, the last three from inside three feet.

He added another three-putt from 21 feet on the 11th, missed a four-foot birdie putt on the 14th, three-putted again from 49 feet on the 15th, missing the second from three feet, before he did the same thing a hole later starting from 29 feet.

When the round was over Scott had statistically dropped 6.3 shots putting on the field over the 18 holes.

Understandably miffed with his performance, Scott declined to comment other than to say the statistics would tell the story.

He entered the tournament ranked a dismal 189th on the US tour in strokes gained putting and will drop even further.

Scott will need to put it behind him quickly as he is entered at this week's US PGA tour Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte.
