Screwdriver attacker arrested in Sydney

A man armed with a screwdriver has assaulted a customer in a Sydney service station, police say.

A man who allegedly used a screwdriver to assault a customer at a service station in southwest Sydney has been arrested and charged after returning to the scene.

Police say that at about 8.20pm (AEDT) on Saturday a man entered the station on Macquarie Street in Liverpool and assaulted the male customer.

They said the service station attendant was also threatened with the screwdriver and the offender demanded money.

When the employee locked himself in a rear room and alerted police, the offender fled but returned to the store a short time later, where he was arrested by police.

The 22-year-old man was charged with assault with intent to rob and armed with an offensive implement.

He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.

The customer, aged in his 40s, suffered a minor graze during the incident, but did not require medical attention.
